Welcome to New MD Med School for Ft. Worth

by Dan Burgard

I was added to this list a few days ago and seeing the message about a list of members makes me think this may be a good time to introduce myself.

My name is Dan Burgard and I am the director of the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth, Texas.  Our library web page is at http://library.hsc.unt.edu. Our institution has been in existence for about 40 years and started as the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.  We are now a full-spectrum health science center with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health, and School of Health Professions.  All together, we have 1400 FTE students.

I am on this list because UNTHSC is in the planning stages to add an MD school.  (Yes, we would then have two separate medical schools operating in the same location.  If you have a few days, I could explain the reasoning behind this.)  There is some chance that the decision will be made not to add a new school, but it looks like it is rolling along like a locomotive at the moment.  So, I am here because I will eventually have questions about LCME accreditation.

Our library is a free standing four story building of which the library occupies the top three floors (78,000 sq ft).  We have 23 FTE staff (10 librarians, 13 staff).  We are supposed to be “receiving” a librarian position upon the creation of the MD school.  The new librarian position will be designated for informatics instruction and I suppose we will title the position “instruction librarian.”

I found out about this listserv when Debbie Rand and Laurie Thompson (UT-Southwestern library director) came for a visit last week as part of Debbie’s AAHSL mentorship with Laurie.  I am hoping that you all will be a good source of information about LCME accreditation issue that we will eventually face.  I will also try to contribute whatever info I can when questions arise on the list.
